Queensland Government Commits To 2032 Olympic Bid With $20 Million Taskforce

The Queensland Government has officially taken steps towards launching a bid for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, announcing a co-funded study with the federal government into how much the event would cost taxpayers.

The state government will match the federal government’s $10 million contributions for the study, building on studies already carried out by the southeast Queensland Council of Mayors.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will chair a cross-government Taskforce charged with assessing venues, transport infrastructure and economic viability.

The Premier said a recent IOC decision allowing a bid from a region rather than a city was a ‘game-changer’, along with continuing to use existing infrastructure.

“This next stage will allow an Olympics that is inclusive of Queensland,” the Premier said.

“We delivered a Commonwealth Games that got the world’s attention, that was inclusive of cities outside the Gold Coast such as Townsville and Cairns and we delivered them on time and under budget.”

The Premier said all levels of government, as well as the corporate sector, would have to co-operate.

“Competing in a world-class sporting event is all about teamwork and preparation,” the Premier said.

“So is delivering a successful bid.”

“This could be the greatest thing that ever happened in Queensland.”
