Premier League clubs to face sanctions for inflated sponsorship and transfer deals

In a bid to maintain fairness and integrity within the English Premier League, clubs will now be subject to stricter regulations regarding sponsorship and transfer deals involving entities connected to their owners.

Recent revisions to the league’s rules aim to prevent clubs from unfairly benefiting from inflated deals with businesses or organisations associated with their ownership.

According to a report by The Times, the updated rules stress the importance of clubs ensuring that all deals are conducted at fair market value. Failure to adhere to this principle could result in sanctions for clubs, as outlined in the league’s new handbook.

An independent commission will be responsible for evaluating any breaches and determining appropriate penalties based on the severity of the violation.

The introduction of these rules has sparked controversy among clubs, with some expressing opposition during the voting process in February. Clubs like Manchester City and Newcastle United, as well as those operating under multi-club ownership models, voted against the new regulations.

Outlined in the new Premier League handbook, these rules aim to ‘ensure the long-term financial sustainability of clubs by extinguishing reliance on enhanced commercial revenues received from entities linked to the club’s ownership’, and will promote ‘fairness amongst clubs, so that clubs are not able to derive an unfair advantage over domestic competitors by increasing revenues or reducing costs via arrangements with entities linked to a club’s ownership’.
