NZC Appoints Virtual Eye as Innovation Partner

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has formally appointed Virtual Eye, the sports division of Animation Research Ltd, as its official Innovation Partner.

The collaboration is structured through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that commits both entities to explore advancements in high-performance analytics, broadcast innovation, and enhanced fan engagement.

The agreement outlines the co-development of tools for biomechanics, conditioning, and data systems, designed to be integrated directly into NZC’s high-performance programmes.

The move underscores NZC’s strategy to remain relevant in a data-intensive global sport, a point attached by NZC chief executive, Scott Weenink.

“We’re small, but we’re also agile and flexible and remaining at the forefront of cricket’s data-driven future is crucial to our success, on and off the field.”

Enhancing Commercial Broadcast Value

For sports professionals, the partnership’s focus on “broadcast innovation” and advanced sports graphics carries significant commercial relevance.

By improving the visual product offered to domestic and international broadcasters, NZC is strategically enhancing the perceived value of its media rights for future negotiations.

Virtual Eye, founded by Sir Ian Taylor and known globally for its work across the PGA Tour, MLB, and the America’s Cup, brings established credibility in elevating the viewer experience.

Emphasising the mutual benefit inherent in the co-development model, Taylor, added:

“Working directly with NZC gives us the chance to co-develop tools that not only enhance the performance of New Zealand’s players but also inspire, entertain and educate fans at home and abroad.”

The agreement with Virtual Eye follows NZC’s recent digital advancements, including the launch of the “Cricket Central” community app and the appointment of CricViz as its Performance Analysis and Scoring Partner.
