North Melbourne appoints Rhys Harwood as Head of AFLW

North Melbourne has solidified its commitment to long-term dominance in the AFLW, announcing the appointment of senior assistant Rhys Harwood to the newly created role of Head of AFLW.

The move serves as an internal promotion for the architect of the club’s recent list build, as the Kangaroos pivot toward a refined leadership model ahead of the 2026 season.

Under the new structure, Harwood will oversee the strategic direction of the women’s football program and lead the coaching department. Crucially for the playing group, he will retain his “hands-on” duties as senior assistant coach under senior coach Darren Crocker, maintaining continuity for a squad that completed a historic undefeated 2025 season.

Commenting on Rhys’ appointment, North Melbourne general manager of strategy and women’s football, Erin Lorenzini, said: “Rhys has contributed significantly to the progress of our program over a number of seasons.”

“To have a coach of his calibre — who was highly sought after across the League — choose to stay and grow his career at Arden Street is a massive win,” Lorenzini said.

Sustaining the ‘Shinboner’ Dynasty

The restructure follows a near-flawless period for the club, including a 27-game winning streak that culminated in a 40-point Grand Final victory over Brisbane last November. By maximising Harwood, North Melbourne aims to professionalise its off-field operations to match the “high performance standards” of its on-field results.

“Taking on the Head of AFLW role allows me to have a broader impact on our coaching and high performance standards.”

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved here… and [I am] staying hands-on with a group of players I care deeply about,” Harwood said.

The club also confirmed that the medical and high performance departments, led by Alex Veitch and Vincent Atkinson, will remain unchanged, ensuring the “health of the list” remains a priority as the Roos hunt for an unprecedented third consecutive flag.

Retention Amid League-Wide Interest

The appointment is a major coup for the organisation, coming after Harwood reportedly turned down interest from several rival clubs seeking new senior coaches.

Harwood’s tenure at North Melbourne began with the list’s inception in 2018, where he served as list manager before transitioning into coaching. His dual expertise in talent acquisition and tactical execution is viewed as the cornerstone of the club’s back-to-back premiership success in 2024 and 2025.
