Nike have release their 2020 “Impact Report”, publishing the results on their targets achieved in the last five years, whilst also releasing a detailed 2025 target overview.

In the report, representation of women, inclusivity, and climate change action were the major takeaways in which 29 targets have been developed which are “aggressive, but achievable”, according to Nike.

There were three main targets in 2020 for Nike, based around sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and community investments.

Women made up 49.5% of all Nike employees, whilst 55% of the 310 interns at the brand were woman in 2020.

By 2025, Nike want to raise this figure to 50%, highlighting the importance Nike place gender pay inequality across the globe.

Black inequality was highlighted in the report by Nike CEO, John Donahoe, who said equality is one of Nike’s core values.

“Our brand would not be what it is today without the powerful contributions of black athletes,” Donahoe said.

“That’s why we’re taking meaningful action to support organizations focused on advancing racial equality in the US, including a combined $140 million commitment from Nike, Converse, Jordan Brand, and Michael Jordan,” he said.

Looking ahead to 2025, Nike are aiming for a 35% representation of racial and ethnic minorities in the US corporate workforce, all while investing USD$125 million to support organisations to address racial inequality.

Nike are also placing large emphasis on climate inaction in their 2025 goals.

Currently, Nike are using 100% renewable energy in the United States (US) and Canada on owned or operated sites, and have reduced their energy of consumption per pair of shoe produced by nearly 10%.

Nike also report 47 million kilograms of manufacturing scraps were recycled into new footwear products.

Main aims for 2025 for the brand focus on waste management, with goals of 100% of waste diverted from landfill in their extended supply chain with at least 80% recycled back into Nike products, and a further 10 times the amount of finished product waste recycled.
