Saudi-backed streaming service, DAZN, has reportedly entered the race for New Zealand Rugby’s broadcasting rights, a development that could significantly impact the future of rugby coverage.
Despite ongoing discussions with current rightsholder, Sky, New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has yet to secure a new deal.
Discussions between Sky and NZR are underway, yet a resolution remains elusive, primarily due to Sky’s reduced financial offer compared to the current deal, prompting NZR to consider alternative options.
NZ Herald rugby journalist, Gregor Paul, highlighted that NZR is proactively seeking out potential bidders who can present a more competitive proposal.
In his analysis, he suggests that DAZN’s interest may also extend to acquiring Sky, as the platform is currently in the process of purchasing Australia’s Foxtel.
As the situation unfolds, DAZN is viewed as a serious contender to make a last-minute bid for the rugby broadcasting rights, which are set to expire after this year.
In light of these developments, Sportstalk host D’Arcy Waldegrave elaborated on the significance of DAZN’s potential involvement in negotiations, indicating that the outcome could reshape the landscape for rugby fans in New Zealand.
