THE legendary Mary Meeker has just released her highly anticipated annual report on internet trends across the globe.
Meeker, who is a Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, an American venture capital firm, has released 294 slides at this year’s Code Conference, covering everything from smartphone behaviour in the U.S. to tech company competition in China.
One of the most opportunistic trends to come out of the report is U.S. adults spent 5.9 hours per day on digital media in 2017, up from 5.6 hours the year before. Some 3.3 of those hours were spent on mobile, which is responsible for overall growth in digital media consumption.
This comes at a time when brands and sporting bodies are looking to increase consumer engagement through innovative and creative marketing campaigns.
According to a survey by Statista, nearly 2.62 billion people have active social media accounts worldwide today, with content becoming more important than ever to connect with fans.
As technologies continue to improve and the way fans interact with athletes continue to evolve, Meeker believes usage will only continue to grow.
“One of the things I feel very strongly about is, there’s a lot of innovation, there’s a lot of competition and that’s driving a lot of product improvements which is increasing usage,” she said.
“Devices are getting better, faster and cheaper.”
The report also stating daily video usage has increased from 20 to 30 minutes, confirming digital consumption is on the rise.
