New IPL Rights Package Worth $8.9 Billion
Viacom18 has signed a deal worth US$3.05 billion (AUD$4.4 billion) for a collection of international broadcast rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), while Disney Star has retained domestic broadcast rights for US$3.02 billion (AUD$4.37 billion).
The new deal will see Viacom18’s financial capabilities increase with two streaming products debuting in the Indian market with Paramount+ joining Voot next year.
Also, ESPNcricinfo has stated the IPL is now only behind the National Football League (NFL) in pre-match value with Disney Star’s package seeing it pay approximately US$7.4 million per match and Viacom18 paying around US$6.4 million each game.
The deal will see the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provide cash boosts for the league’s franchises by giving them around US$64.1 million each.
The biggest growth driver for the IPL’s new rights has been the increase in value of the tournament’s digital packages for around US$3.01 billion which marks a 42% increase since Disney Star’s rights deal from 2018 to 2022.
