Netflix reports record Q1 Performance

Netflix’s strategic expansion into the sports broadcasting arena is positioning the streaming service as a formidable player within the global sports landscape, evidenced by its encouraging Q1 2025 results.

In Q1 2025, Netflix recorded a revenue increase of 12.5%, totalling USD$10.54 billion (AUD$16.51 billion), surpassing both internal expectations and analyst forecasts for subscription and advertising revenue growth.

The company’s net income rose significantly, climbing from USD$2.33 billion (AUD$3.6 billion) to USD$2.89 billion (AUD$4.53 billion) in comparison to the previous year.

The spike in revenue has been attributed largely to a surge in memberships and recent price adjustments.

Notably, Netflix increased the subscription fee for its standard plan to USD$17.99 (ADU$28.19) per month, while its ad-supported tier remains at USD$7.99 (AUD$12.52) and the premium plan retails for USDD$24.99 (AUD$39.16).

The revenue boost from advertising also reflects a year-over-year improvement, bolstered by the airing of two NFL games on Christmas Day.

These were the first NFL matches broadcast live on Netflix, with the platform successfully selling out its ad inventory for these events.

While these NFL fixtures represent a unique addition to Netflix’s ongoing sports strategy, the recent establishment of a 10-year partnership with WWE for its flagship programme Monday Night RAW signals a significant shift in the platform’s approach to sports content.

The early outcomes of this partnership are promising, as Netflix reports that RAW has consistently ranked among the top ten weekly shows across 29 countries since its debut on 9 January 2025.

Furthermore, Netflix also holds rights to stream WWE Premium Live Events internationally, having recently broadcast WrestleMania from Las Vegas.

Additionally, Netflix is gearing up to broadcast the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cups after obtaining the US rights, marking a notable milestone in its sports content offerings.
