Sir Mo Farah, who has won four Olympic gold medals, is set to revolutionise long-distance running with the launch of RunGP, a new endurance racing series that aims to make the sport more exciting and accessible to a wider audience.
RunGP, the flagship series of the Global Running League (GRL), will blend elite competition with mass participation, hosting races on Formula One circuits, with the inaugural event taking place at the Lusail International Circuit in Doha on May 9 and 10, with sports streaming platform, DAZN, securing live broadcasting rights as part of a distribution agreement.
One of the standout features of RunGP is its unique team-based format, which will see professional athletes teaming up with influencers and celebrities.
The main event will feature a high-intensity team relay, with four squads competing across seven one-kilometre laps, adding a fresh and dynamic twist to endurance racing.
In addition to the elite competition, RunGP will embrace mass participation by allowing runners of all levels to take part in a 7.032-kilometre race.
Further emphasising inclusivity and engagement, Farah will also lead a youth-focused initiative called ‘One Mo Mile,’ aimed at inspiring the next generation of runners.
Beyond the competition, RunGP has committed to sustainability, partnering with Sports For Nature as its official sustainability partner.
Commenting on RunGP, founder and CEO of GRL, Marcel Muenster, said: “For too long, running has been treated as an individual pursuit.”
“We’re introducing a new, commercially viable format where the spectacle matches the sport, where technology enhances the viewing experience and where participation is accessible to all.
“The potential for innovation in running has been untapped and we intend to change that.
“Running is the most accessible sport in the world but it has lacked a structured competitive league. RunGP provides the missing piece, creating an experience that excites both runners and spectators. With elite team competitions and mass participation at iconic circuits, we are turning running into something bigger than ever before,” he said
Additionally, the series has secured Sweat Economy as a founding partner, enabling participants to earn $SWEAT cryptocurrency by running in events, while fans and runners will be able to track their movement progress and access rewards through the Sweat Wallet platform, adding an innovative digital element to the experience.
