The Florida-based Major League Baseball team, the Miami Marlins have announced Caroline O’Connor as their new President of Business Operations.
The appointment sees her join the first female general manager in US men’s sport history, Kim Ng, at the helm of the franchise, making them what the Marlins believe to be the first team to have women operating the entirety of the day-to-day.
O’Connor, who joined the organisation in 2017, will now be in charge on all the club’s business operations, including sales, partnerships, marketing, human resources, diversity, equity and inclusion, finance, legal, communications, community outreach, technology, security, ballpark facilities and special projects.
After five years working as managing director for American financial service company, Morgan Stanley, O’Connor took the role of senior vice president and chief of staff upon arrival at the Marlins, later becoming chief operating officer in 2019.
Commenting on her new role, O’Connor said: “I’ve always worked for first-class organizations, and that’s certainly what [chairman and principal owner] Bruce [Sherman] wants to see here and really what the mandate is.”
“I think using best practices and being the kind of organization that people want to work for and want to support the community, that’s exactly what we want here, and a lot of where I came from,” she said.
Miami Marlins chairman, and principal owner, Bruce Sherman, added: “We are fortunate to have someone with Caroline’s business acumen and vision leading our day-to-day business operations.”
“Her passion and drive for success is unmatched in our game and the South Florida market.
“Her leadership will continue to guide the Marlins organization toward our goal of sustained success while strategizing additional new ventures to grow our business and enhance our brand recognition,” he said
