Exclusive: Breeanna Brock and Pete Lock Reflect On The Women In Sport Summit 2021

The Ministry of Sport Women in Sport Summit 2021 took place on Friday at USC Stadium, delivered in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and Tourism and Events Queensland.

Brisbane Lions women’s football CEO, Breeanna Brock, and Queensland Cricket commercial & marketing manager, Pete Lock, spoke at the Ministry of Sport Women in Sport Summit 2021.

Brock and Lock discussed with Ministry of Sport’s Ben Parsons how to commercial women’s sport and the challenges of opportunities within the market for both women’s football and women’s cricket.

Reflecting on the event, which saw keynote speeches from a number of key figures from around Australian sport on the growth and challenges of women’s sport, Brock said Belinda Keay’s presentation on the success of the women’s Big Bash League was a highlight.

“I really enjoyed the presentation Belinda did on the village ethos and that has me thinking about what we can learn from that experience,” Brock told Ministry of Sport.

Lock said hearing the thoughts and processes from other codes was the highlight of the day.

“It’s really important to have input from other codes and understand how they’re doing things and some of the challenges they’re facing,” Lock told Ministry of Sport.

“There’s an opportunity for us to all have a collective approach to this.

“If the Lions have been successful, it helps us to push and do more.

“I think that’s been a real highlight for me, to hear about other codes going about it,” he said.

Brock added the work is never done in progressing women’s sport.

“We’re shoulder to the wheel,” Brock told Ministry of Sport.

“We’ve gotta keep pushing, we’re all responsible for the health of women’s sport and that’s a big responsibility at times,” she said.

Over the coming weeks, Ministry of Sport will be releasing video footage from the Women in Sport Summit, including the discussion between Breeanna Brock, Pete Lock, and Ben Parsons on the challenges and opportunities in commercialising women’s sport.
