Basketball Australia Launches Data-Led Development Program at Centre of Excellence

Basketball Australia has unveiled LEVEL UP, a new athlete development initiative at its Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Canberra, designed to integrate gamification and data-driven learning into elite basketball pathways.

The program, which will initially be rolled out to the 30-plus athletes currently enrolled at the CoE, aims to give athletes greater ownership of their learning while providing a holistic framework for development on and off the court.

Built by Basketball Australia’s Performance Wellbeing department in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), LEVEL UP combines digital platforms with interactive learning methods to prepare athletes for professional careers and life beyond sport.

Sharing how the initiative reflects the organisation’s focus on equipping athletes with broader life skills alongside their on-court training, Basketball Australia’s Head of Wellbeing, Rhian Bird, said: “This program is about giving athletes the skills to navigate their life and professional basketball careers, as well as setting them up for a successful life after sport.”

The program uses a gamified system in which athletes progress through a map-based framework, earning skills and knowledge “levels” that are tracked in real time on their player profiles. According to Basketball Australia, this format is intended to increase engagement while fostering resilience and identity beyond the sport itself.

Structural Implication

LEVEL UP signals a step towards digitisation of high-performance pathways. The program integrates with Basketball Australia’s existing Learning Management System and Athlete Management System, creating a scalable model that could extend beyond basketball.

A review at the end of 2026 will assess its long-term viability, with potential for application across other national teams and high-performance environments.

Commercial Standpoint

the pilot has attracted backing from Foot Locker, extending the brand’s existing partnership with Basketball Australia. For the retailer, the association reinforces its alignment with grassroots and elite basketball pathways, providing visibility within a development program linked to Australia’s next generation of professional talent.

The Centre of Excellence has long been a cornerstone of Australia’s basketball pipeline, producing current NBA and WNBA players including Patty Mills, Joe Ingles and Dante Exum.

The introduction of LEVEL UP reflects a continuation of the holistic development model but with an increased emphasis on technology, personalisation, and market-relevant skills that resonate with today’s athlete environment.
