Australian Sports Foundation Announce 118M Donations to Sports Development

Australians donated a record $118.8 million to sport in FY24/25, according to the latest State of Sports Fundraising report released by the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF).

The 20 per cent increase on the previous year highlights the critical role private donations now play in sustaining community clubs and supporting athletes amid rising participation costs.

The report found donations supported a broad spectrum of needs, from infrastructure upgrades and travel assistance to athlete development programs.

While participation levels remain high, ASF Interim CEO, Ryan Holloway, noted that financial pressures are creating challenges for families and clubs alike.

“Sport is thriving on the field but struggling off it, australians are giving more often, even in smaller amounts, and it’s that generosity that is assisting in the sustainability of our clubs, backing our athletes and ensuring sport remains accessible – but it proves fundraising is essential, ”Holloway said.

The report also highlighted the rising trend of athletes individual fundraising, with 19 per cent more donations to athletes compared to the previous year. Total funds raised by individuals reached AUD7.3 million, reflecting increased reliance on personal campaigns to offset training and competition expenses.

“While Paris 2024 inspired many donors, the 19 per cent increase in individual donations tells a broader story.”

“Australians are backing athletes at all levels of sport. With major events like the Winter Games in 2026 and Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, that grassroots support is what turns potential into performance,” Holloway added.

Australian Football led all codes, attracting AUD40.5 million in donations, followed by Soccer with AUD20.3 million, reflecting an AUD11.1 million year-on-year increase. Other strong performers included Golf (AUD10.6 million), Rugby Union (AUD5.4 million), and Surfing (AUD4.3 million). Rugby Union also led in campaign activity, with 383 initiatives launched during the financial year.

At a state level, New South Wales reclaimed top spot for total donations at AUD45.7 million, driven by strong growth across Soccer, Golf, Rugby League, and Rugby Union. Victoria followed closely at AUD45.6 million, buoyed by AFL clubs investing heavily in facility and infrastructure projects.

Since its inception 39 years ago, Australian Sports Foundation has facilitated over AUD900 million in tax-deductible donations, supporting more than 14,000 clubs and individuals nationwide.
