IndyCar Finalises 17-Race 2027 Schedule: European Expansion to Barcelona Replaces Nashville and D.C.

Penske Entertainment and IndyCar leadership have finalised the full 17-race calendar for the 2027 NTT IndyCar Series, confirming an international expansion into Europe alongside notable domestic omissions.
The headline addition sees North America’s premier open-wheel championship race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on July 18, 2027, marking IndyCar’s first sanctioned race on European soil since the 2007 Champ Car event at Assen.
Concurrently, IndyCar has dropped its presence in Tennessee by removing Nashville Superspeedway from the schedule, while also confirming that the high-profile Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C. will remain a one-off event.

International Footprint and Spain Debut

The agreement to race at the 2.857-mile Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya establishes an anchor European venue for the series, directly leveraging the global profile of five-time IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou.
The IndyCar Grand Prix of Barcelona is scheduled as Round 12 of the championship, flanked by open travel weeks on either side of the July 18 date to facilitate transatlantic freight logistics.
Every session and race of the 2027 season will broadcast live on broadcast network FOX for the third consecutive year under the series’ exclusive domestic media rights package.

Domestic Calendar Realignment and Market Omissions

The schedule revision highlights a operational trade-off between expanding international property value and managing domestic event logistics:
  • Nashville Exit: IndyCar moved its season finale to the 1.33-mile concrete oval at Nashville Superspeedway in 2024 as a temporary measure due to ongoing construction surrounding the Tennessee Titans’ new NFL stadium. With a return to the downtown street layout deemed unviable for 2027, the series has vacated the Volunteer State market entirely.
  • Washington, D.C. One-Off: Despite generating record-breaking television ratings (3.282M viewers on FOX) and attracting over 215,000 spectators to the temporary National Mall street circuit, logistical complexities around federal venue permitting and municipal footprint restrictions precluded an immediate 2027 return.
  • Season Finale Relocation: The 2027 championship will conclude at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on September 5, wrapping up prior to the start of the NFL regular season to protect broadcast viewership.
