Netball Queensland and the Queensland Firebirds have announced a partnership with infrastructure giant Fulton Hogan, aimed at addressing the state’s skilled labour shortage by recruiting from the sporting world.
The collaboration seeks to funnel more women into the construction sector as Queensland prepares for a record $127.5 billion major project pipeline, including critical infrastructure for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Commenting on the partnership, CEO – Construction at Fulton Hogan, Brett Smiley, said: “Partnering with Netball Queensland provides us with a unique platform to challenge outdated perceptions… and to showcase real career pathways.”
He highlighted that many of the 250 different types of roles available (ranging from project delivery to plant operation) rely on the teamwork and leadership skills inherent in competitive sport.
Emphasising the programme’s ability to connect regional and metropolitan talent with tangible employment outcomes, Netball Queensland and Firebirds CEO , Kate Davies, added: “As the largest female participation sport in Queensland… we can leverage our statewide network to connect talent with real opportunities.”
With women currently making up only 13 per cent of the state’s construction workforce, and less than five per cent in on-site trade roles, Fulton Hogan is targeting athletes as a high-potential talent pool. The organisation has already made strides in diversity, with women comprising 20 per cent of its Australian workforce, but it views this partnership as essential to meeting the demand for approximately 180 current vacancies.
The partnership will feature player engagement and community initiatives designed to bridge the gap between “the court and the construction site.”
