Matt Carroll to Depart AOC After Eight Years

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced that Chief Executive Officer Matt Carroll will step down after next year’s Annual General Meeting in May 2025, concluding an eight-year tenure marked by organisational and cultural transformation.

Carroll’s departure is strategically timed to ensure a smooth transition ahead of key milestones, including the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Games, Los Angeles 2028, French Alps 2030, and Brisbane 2032. A global search for his successor will begin in January 2025.

AOC President Ian Chesterman commended Carroll for fostering strong relationships with the AOC’s 46 member sports and guiding the organisation through challenges such as the COVID-impacted Tokyo 2020 Games.

“Matt’s leadership has transformed the AOC into a workplace of choice within the sports industry, delivering enduring programs such as Olympics Unleashed and the Reconciliation Action Plan,” Chesterman said.

During his tenure, Carroll oversaw initiatives that enhanced the AOC’s community impact and laid the groundwork for Brisbane 2032’s legacy opportunities. Reflecting on his decision, Carroll cited the need for continuity across the LA and Brisbane Olympic cycles.

“The two Quads of LA and Brisbane must be managed as one to maximise opportunities. The right time for my departure is 2025, ensuring a successor can confidently lead this critical period,” he said.

The AOC will work with Carroll to ensure a seamless leadership transition, with recruitment beginning early next year.
