NBA considers creation of standalone European League

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is exploring the possibility of establishing its own standalone league in Europe, as reported by Sportico.

According to the report, the NBA is considering various options to bolster its footprint in Europe, with discussions reportedly held with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the EuroLeague elite basketball competition.

While specific formats or locations for the proposed league have not been finalised, the NBA is exploring avenues that may exclude EuroLeague involvement.

In February, the NBA enlisted the services of the Raine Group to evaluate strategic investment opportunities in the region. The NBA is seeking investors with ties to Europe, whose support would be instrumental in realising the project.

The potential creation of an NBA Europe League would strengthen the NBA’s collaboration with FIBA, following the successful launch of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) in 2021. Mark Tatum, NBA’s deputy commissioner, also serves on FIBA’s central board, indicating a close partnership between the two organisations.

Sportico noted that stakeholders have approached the NBA with proposals for expanding its European business independently of EuroLeague. Previous discussions with EuroLeague have explored avenues for mutual support, including access to the NBA’s team marketing and business operations (TMBO) arm.

Potential collaborations may involve selling partnerships for EuroLeague, similar to the NBA’s arrangements with USA Basketball.

Additionally, discussions include the possibility of organising an intercontinental competition featuring high-profile teams from Europe and other regions – similar to FIBA’s existing Intercontinental Cup.
