Rugby Australia invites expressions of interest from qualified individuals to join its Judicial Panel and Code of Conduct Panel, playing a crucial role in upholding the sport’s fairness, integrity, and inclusivity standards.

Judicial Panel Members are tasked with reviewing on-field incidents such as foul play, red cards, or citing cases. They operate under Rugby Australia’s Disciplinary Rules, World Rugby Regulation 17, and the Laws of the Game, ensuring impartial hearings and fair sanctions.

Code of Conduct Panel Members focus on off-field matters, including adherence to the Code of Conduct, Child Safeguarding Policy, and Social Media Policy. Their responsibilities include hearing cases, imposing sanctions, and assisting with investigations when required.

Both panels are convened for domestic rugby competitions across all levels, including Super Rugby Trial, Super Rugby W, Next Gen 7s, and Community Rugby.

Hearings are predominantly conducted online during weeknights, providing flexibility for volunteers.

Panel members must:

  • Ensure fair and consistent decision-making based on the laws, codes, and policies of Rugby Australia and World Rugby.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and impartiality throughout proceedings.
  • Provide well-reasoned decisions promptly and support the needs of young and vulnerable participants where applicable.
  • Uphold Rugby Australia’s core values: Integrity, Respect, Teamwork, Passion, and Discipline.

Who Should Apply?
Rugby Australia seeks individuals with experience in sports law, the rugby industry (e.g., players, coaches, referees, or administrators), or investigations.

Legal Members:

  • Must be current or retired legal practitioners, judges, or qualified arbitrators with at least three years of experience.
  • Experience with disciplinary proceedings, especially in sports, is highly desirable.

Ordinary Members:

  • Should have extensive experience in rugby as players, coaches, officials, or administrators.
  • Backgrounds in disciplinary panels, complaint management, or safeguarding are advantageous but not mandatory.

Why Join?
Panel members play an essential role in ensuring rugby remains safe, fair, and enjoyable for all participants. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the sport’s integrity while gaining valuable experience in disciplinary and governance processes.

How to Apply
Interested individuals are encouraged to email their cover letter and CV to Amy Thorp, Rugby Australia’s Senior Legal Counsel – Head of Integrity, at [email protected]. Applications close on 25 January 2025.

Unsuccessful candidates may also be referred to their State or Territory Member Union for consideration.
