World Rugby Unveils Restructured HSBC SVNS Series for 2025/26 Season

World Rugby has confirmed the details of the 2025/26 HSBC SVNS Series, introducing a three-division model designed to expand the global sevens footprint and establish clearer pathways for emerging nations. The new format features six regular-season rounds culminating in a three-event World Championship, which will decide the top-tier line-up for 2027.

The restructuring is positioned to strengthen the international calendar in the lead-up to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, while also addressing long-term questions of competitive balance and accessibility within sevens.

Development Pathways and Growth in Women’s Rugby

The Series is already demonstrating influence on player development, particularly in the women’s game. More than 50 current players at the Rugby World Cup in England have progressed through sevens pathways. The new model seeks to build on this by providing a direct route for regional qualifiers to reach the global stage within a single season.

Sharing the updated model, reflects a broader strategy to enhance both the sport’s competitiveness and its international profile, World Rugby Chief Executive, Alan Gilpin, said: “Following a competitive process, we are delighted to confirm the locations and dates for the new-look HSBC SVNS 2026 Series, which features a three-location World Championship, adding to the excitement for fans.”

“Moving to a two-day format has proven a hit with destinations and we are delighted with the level of engagement and enthusiasm from cities and national unions, who share our vision of advancing sevens on the world stage ahead of the LA 2028 Olympic Games,” Gilpin said.

Australian Leg Secured for February

Australia will again host a leg of the Series, shifting away from its recent Australia Day long weekend scheduling in Perth.

The 2026 event will be held in early February, with the host city still to be announced. The adjustment is part of a broader effort to align the sevens calendar with peak international broadcast slots and destination demand.
