University of Oregon Launches Olympic Studies Hub

The University of Oregon (UO) has launched the Olympic Studies Hub, a one-of-a-kind initiative in the United States. Recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Studies Centre, the hub is part of a global network of nearly 80 academic Olympic Studies and Research Centres.

Advancing Olympic Knowledge
The hub focuses on four key areas: experiential learning, business and the philosophy of Olympism, studies and research, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Its goal is to explore the Olympic movement’s impact while preparing students for careers in the sports industry.

“Global attention is on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The hub will foster collaboration and advance the world’s knowledge of the Olympics,” said Karl Scholz, President of the University of Oregon.

A Legacy of Excellence
The University of Oregon has deep ties to the Olympic movement:

  • Hayward Field regularly hosts Olympic Trials and major track events like the Diamond League Prefontaine Classic and the World Athletics Championships Oregon22.
  • Over 100 Oregon Ducks alumni have competed in the Olympics, representing more than 20 countries.
  • As the birthplace of Nike, the university has long been connected to Olympic sponsors.
  • The business school offers specialized courses on the Olympics and facilitates study abroad programs in Olympic cities.

Leadership with Vision
Yoav Dubinsky, a senior instructor of sports business, and T. Bettina Cornwell, a marketing professor and the Philip H. Knight Chair lead the hub. Their expertise ensures students gain both academic and practical insights into the global sports business.

“Our connection to the Olympic movement is strong, and this hub will enhance our professional network and prepare students for leadership roles,” said Dubinsky.

Cornwell added: “The hub bridges theory and practice, giving students unparalleled opportunities to thrive in the competitive sports business arena.”

The Olympic Studies Hub brings together UO’s academic resources with its connections to the sports industry. Students benefit from:

  • Access to courses on Olympic business and marketing.
  • Networking opportunities with sponsors, stakeholders, and professionals in the field.

As the U.S. prepares to host the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the Olympic Studies Hub positions the University of Oregon as a leader in research, education, and industry collaboration.
