Ubisoft Entertainment SA has announced a radical “organisational reset” following a series of financial setbacks and market challenges.
In a major announcement on 21 January 2026, the French publisher confirmed the cancellation of six in-development games, including the high-profile Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, alongside the delay of seven other titles.
The news triggered an immediate crisis on the Euronext Paris, with share prices collapsing by more than 37% to hit a 14-year low.
The organisation is pivotting toward a decentralised model to regain agility and “reclaim creative leadership.” Central to this strategy is the formation of five Creative Houses, each with full financial accountability and ownership over specific genres.
Vantage Studios, the first of these houses, will focus on scaling “billion-dollar brands” such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, while other divisions will manage shooters, live services, and family-friendly titles.
Commenting on the announcement, CEO Yves Guillemot, said: “These measures mark a decisive turning point for Ubisoft.”
“The portfolio refocus will have a significant impact on our short-term financial trajectory, but this reset will strengthen the Group and enable it to renew with sustainable growth and robust cash generation,” Guillemot said.
Strategic Financial Recovery and Workforce Impact
The reset comes at a steep cost, with Ubisoft forecasting an operating loss of approximately €1 billion for fiscal year 2026. This figure includes a EURO650 million (AUD1.1 billion) one-off depreciation charge directly linked to the scrapped projects.
The company aim to reduce fixed costs by €500 million by 2028, having already eliminated 3,000 positions since 2023.
Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Halifax have been shuttered, with further restructuring confirmed for teams at Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Abu Dhabi.
A new policy requiring staff to be on-site five days a week has sparked a historic worker strike. The Solidaires Informatique union launched industrial action on 22 January 2026, citing the move as “terrifying” for employees who relocated during the remote-work era.
The reason behind the pivot is a shift toward a more selective AAA market. By prioritising “Open-World Adventures” and “GaaS-native experiences,” Ubisoft aims to maximise long-term value from its most recognisable IP.
However, with seven games now delayed, including the rumoured Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remake, the publisher faces a lean 12 months as it attempts to stabilise its pipeline.
