Townsville Secured to Host 2027 Little Athletics Queensland State Championships

Little Athletics Queensland has officially confirmed that the 2027 McDonald’s State Championships will return to North Queensland, with Townsville secured as the host city for the three-day pinnacle event.

Scheduled to take place from 19 to 21 March 2027, the championships represent a commercial and operational undertaking for the organisation as it seeks to decentralise major competitions and bolster regional sporting pathways.

Commenting on the announcement, Little Athletics Queensland CEO, Christopher Davis, stated that the decision to head north reflects a broader commitment to statewide accessibility.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the 2027 McDonald’s State Championships back to Townsville.”

“Our 2023 event demonstrated the region’s ability to host high-quality competition,

“and we’re excited to once again partner with Townsville City Council to deliver an exceptional experience for our athletes and families,” Davis said.

The significance of the event extends beyond the track, with the influx of athletes and families expected to provide a substantial boost to the local tourism and hospitality sectors. Townsville City Council Deputy Mayor and Townsville 2032 Legacy Working Group Chair, Suzy Batkovic, highlighted that securing the event is a major victory for the city’s long-term sporting strategy.

“Securing the 2027 McDonald’s State Championships for Townsville is a significant win for North Queensland.”

“With Brisbane 2032 on the horizon, events like this play an important role in building confidence,

“pathways and inspiration for the next generation of athletes right here in North Queensland,” Cr Batkovic noted.

The successful bid for the event was delivered with the strategy to support the Townsville City Council and Sports Marketing Australia.

This partnership marks the return of the state-level competition to the region for the first time since 2023, an event that was previously noted for its high levels of community engagement and volunteer support. By rotating the championships away from South East Queensland, the organisation aims to reduce the significant travel and financial demands placed on regional and remote families.

The McDonald’s State Championships remains the most prestigious event on the Little Athletics Queensland calendar, serving as the final stage for athletes across the state to compete for titles and record performances.

Further technical information and programming details for the March event are expected to be released by the organisation in the coming months.
