The announcement was made by Minister for Sport, The Hon Anika Wells MP, alongside Netball Australia CEO Stacey West, Origin Australian Diamonds head coach Stacey Marinkovich, and players Courtney Bruce, Ash Ervin, Cara Koenen, and Liz Watson at the Downey Park Netball Association in Brisbane earlier today.

This significant funding injection is dedicated to supporting the planning and execution of the Sydney 2027 Netball World Cup, which aligns with Netball Australia’s centenary celebrations. It aims to honour all netball participants, with specific emphasis on the sport’s rich history and the contributions of First Nations Peoples.

Minister Anika Wells highlighted that the Origin Australian Diamonds will vie for the World Cup title on home turf for the first time since 2015, with backing from the extensive netball community of over one million Australian players.

“This $6 million investment from the Albanese Government will contribute to delivering an exceptional Netball World Cup in 2027, creating more opportunities for future Diamonds,” stated Minister Wells.

Acknowledging netball’s status as the sport with the highest female participation rates in Australia, she emphasised the positive impact of women and girls’ involvement in netball on health, social well-being, and economic empowerment, aligning with the government’s gender equality agenda.

Netball Australia CEO Stacey West conveyed gratitude to the Federal Government for their support, highlighting the pivotal role of netball in empowering women and girls nationwide for almost a century. She praised the government’s assistance in organising the Sydney 2027 Netball World Cup, underscoring its significance for the sport’s growth and development.

Origin Australian Diamonds captain Liz Watson hailed the 2027 Netball World Cup as a transformative event for the sport, both domestically and internationally. She emphasised that the Federal Government’s backing would elevate the tournament into a landmark occasion for Australian netball, inspiring the next generation of Australian Diamonds.
