On the back of growing TV audiences and record attendance in 2018, the Shute Shield rugby competition has just signed sports clothing brand Canterbury as a major partner.

With a growing group of sponsors lining up for this year’s Intrust Super Shute Shield competition, Nick Fordham, director of television broadcast rights holder, Club Rugby TV, said having Canterbury join Intrust Super, Fujitsu, Canon and Charter Hall on their sponsorship platform was further acknowledgement of the growing popularity, importance and integrity of the Shute Shield, now about to enter its 96th year.

“Canterbury has a trusted deep history in the game, boasting an amazingly high-quality product and a real desire to help the sport grow at every level,” he said.

Last season’s telecasts attracted record viewership, while weekly club match attendances exceeded all expectations.

“As the premier club rugby competition in Australia, the Shute Shield offers a wonderful platform of opportunities for us to promote our brand,” Canterbury Asia Pacific managing director, Jamie Meikleham said.

“We are delighted at being able to support rugby at this level.”

“Grassroots rugby is the beating heart of the sport and where our future representative stars come from.

“This partnership is about Canterbury living our mission and doing everything for the game”.

The 2019 Intrust Super Shute Shield competition, whose match-of-the round is broadcast on the Seven Network, with replays on Fox Sports, kicks off on Saturday, April 6.

The 2018 grand final between the winner Sydney University and Warringah at North Sydney drew a crowd approaching 20,000.
