Australia has officially announced the seven host cities for the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027, marking a significant step in delivering a nationwide festival of rugby. The event, scheduled from 1 October to 13 November 2027, is expected to drive substantial economic benefits, boost rugby participation, and elevate Australia’s global sporting reputation.

A Strategic Nationwide Approach

Selected for their cultural vibrancy, sporting infrastructure, and tourism appeal, the host cities include Adelaide (Tarntanya), Brisbane (Meeanjin), Melbourne (Narrm), Newcastle (Awabakal-Worimi), Perth (Boorloo), Sydney (Gadigal), and Townsville (Gurambilbarra). The tournament will bring 52 matches across these locations, ensuring a broad economic impact and maximising fan engagement nationwide.

Sydney is set to be the centrepiece, hosting key knockout rounds, including the semi-finals and the final. Brisbane and Melbourne will stage multiple pool and knockout matches, while Perth will kick off the tournament with the opening match.

Economic and Commercial Significance

The Rugby World Cup is projected to generate AUD $1.3 billion in direct visitor expenditure, with an estimated 250,000 international visitors expected to attend. This influx of global tourists is poised to benefit local businesses, hospitality, and tourism industries across all host cities. The tournament also aims to inspire 200,000 new rugby participants by 2029, reinforcing its long-term value to Australian rugby.

Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh emphasised the broader impact, stating, “RWC 2027 presents a unique opportunity for Australia—not just in economic terms, but in energising the fan base and inspiring future generations of players.”

The Road to Australia 2027

The global qualification process for the tournament kicks off this year, with 12 spots up for grabs. The expanded 24-team format is expected to drive greater international engagement and competitiveness.
