New Zealand Rugby (NZR) has launched an initiative to address financial sustainability across all levels of rugby, partnering with key stakeholders to secure the future of the sport.
The project, involving 26 Provincial Unions, five Super Rugby clubs, and NZR’s commercial arm, seeks to create an enduring financial model that benefits both community rugby and high-performance pathways.
“Rugby in New Zealand is strong, with increased participation and engaged fans,” said NZR CEO Mark Robinson. “However, it’s critical that we evolve and invest in grassroots development to provide young players a clear path to the professional game.”
The project, kicking off with workstreams in 2025, will focus on critical areas, including funding structures for Provincial Unions and Super Rugby clubs, growth strategies for NZ Rugby Commercial, and enhanced pathways for both men’s and women’s rugby. NZR commissioned the Men’s Pathways and Competitions (MPAC) report, which highlights the significance of competitions like the NPC, confirming the value of retaining its 14 teams.
Over the remainder of 2024, NZR will discuss financial analysis and strategy with stakeholders, beginning with meetings in Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, and Auckland, culminating in a full stakeholder meeting in December.
Further developments and milestones from this project will be outlined in 2025, as NZR works to secure a sustainable future for rugby across New Zealand.
