The Constellation Cup, an annual international netball test series, is heading to Perth, in another sporting win for Western Australia. Scheduled for October 27 2024, the third match in the series will take place at RAC Arena, coinciding with Netball WA’s centenary celebration as the sport’s governing body.
With the Western Australian Government confirming $550,000 in funding for the event, Netball WA is set to host this significant event that forms part of a series of four test matches between the Australian Diamonds and the New Zealand Silver Ferns. These two teams have been competing fiercely for their countries’ pride since 2010, making the Constellation Cup a highlight in the world netball calendar.
Traditionally, the series features two matches in Australia and two in New Zealand, each held in rotating host cities. This year, fans can anticipate an intense showdown between the Diamonds and the Silver Ferns at RAC Arena, starting at 4 pm on the specified date.
Netball WA’s ‘100 Years of Netball’ celebration will add to the excitement of the event, as the organization commemorates a century of overseeing the sport. As the highest female participation sport in Australia, netball holds a special place in the hearts of many, and Netball WA has planned a series of events to mark this significant milestone.
The upcoming match in Perth comes on the heels of a renewed interest in netball at the elite level, following the Diamonds’ recent victories at the 2023 Netball World Cup and the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Australia’s impressive track record in the Constellation Cup includes winning 11 out of the last 13 competitions, setting the stage for an intense battle on the court.
Netball WA is hoping to deliver a world-class event with the support of funding from the Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program. Minister David Templeman expressed his excitement about the upcoming celebration, emphasising the government’s role in making the event possible and providing local fans with the opportunity to witness international competition firsthand.
Netball Australia CEO Stacey West shared her enthusiasm for hosting the third match of the series in Perth, thanking the Western Australian Government and Netball WA for their invaluable support. The anticipation is high for a thrilling showdown at RAC Arena, where Australian Diamonds fans are expected to fill the stands and rally behind their team.
