The London Broncos have announced a major governance overhaul, with a new ownership group led by Queensland rugby league great Darren Lockyer, businessman Grant Wechsel, and Super League executive Gary Hetherington, as the club formally applies to join the RFL Super League in 2026.
The new backers have pledged to provide the capital and structural capability required to transform the Broncos into a competitive force, following years of fluctuating performance across the second-tier Championship. According to Wechsel, the group has already conducted a full review of operations, with plans to recalibrate the club’s approach across all disciplines.
Positioning the move as not only a club reset but a potential market growth opportunity for the league itself, Wechsel, said: “We want the London Broncos to be the standard-bearer for the Super League.”
Lockyer reinforced the strategic significance of the London market, describing it as the “largest greenfield market for rugby league growth.” His comments highlight the commercial rationale: establishing a sustainable club in the UK’s capital could expand rugby league’s audience, diversify revenues, and strengthen sponsorship appeal in one of the world’s largest financial markets.
The Broncos confirmed a three-year pre-commitment from coach Jason Demetriou, who has NRL and Super League head coaching experience. The club also revealed it is negotiating with several NRL players, including internationals, to make up close to half of its prospective Super League roster.
The timing aligns with the league’s need to reinforce its positioning amid competition from football, rugby union, and other entertainment options in London.
