Ligue 1 Faces Financial Uncertainty After DAZN Mediation Fails

Despite their progress, Ligue 1 is facing considerable financial uncertainty following the unsuccessful mediation with its domestic streaming partner, DAZN.

The partnership, intended to run until 2029 with DAZN paying €400 million (AUD$750 million) annually for eight weekly matches, encountered issues when DAZN sought to renegotiate terms midway through the current season.

A dispute arose, particularly stemming from a legal contention over DAZN withholding €70 million (AUD$125 million) that was due in February, which led the dispute of both parties to mediation talks.

In effort of communication between the two parties, negotiations have officially failed. LFP Media, the commercial and broadcasting wing of Ligue 1, released a brief statement in French acknowledging the unsuccessful mediation which began in early March 2025.

The statement also confirmed that the existing contract remains intact, expecting DAZN to meet its obligations under the current terms.

DAZN communicated that despite the presentation of various proposals during mediation, a mutually agreeable resolution with Ligue 1 could not be reached at this juncture, preventing an amicable settlement.

Neither Ligue 1 nor DAZN representatives responded to requests for further comments from the Front Office Sports, and the aftermath of the failed mediation suggests that further legal complications may be on the horizon.

For DAZN, the severance of its relationship with Ligue 1, though troublesome, may not overly hinder its operations.

The company touted its extraordinary performance in 2024, paving the way for an ambitious and transformative 2025.

While Ligue 1 was mentioned as a partner, DAZN highlighted its collaborations with various other European soccer leagues, as well as prominent sports entities such as the NFL, FIBA, and the PGA Tour.

Furthermore, a recently announced $1 billion (AUD$1.5 billion) deal with FIFA to stream all matches for the expanded men’s Club World Cup, alongside a partnership with TNT Sports to air World Cup matches in the U.S., adds to DAZN’s diverse portfolio.

In addition, the implications for Ligue 1 could be more severe, as the Athletic labelled the situation a “financial crisis” for the league, citing insufficient viewership numbers as a critical factor in the breakdown of the talks.

According to Deloitte’s latest annual review of football finance, Ligue 1 generated approximately $2.53 billion (AUD$3.96 billion) in revenue during the 2022-23 season, placing it fifth among its European peers.

The controversy around media rights has already deterred investment opportunities within Ligue 1.

Two-time Super Bowl champion Logan Ryan revealed to Front Office Sports that he was very close to investing in Toulouse FC, a Ligue 1 club, but ultimately decided against the opportunity as the media rights deal disappointed expectations.

This financial predicament occurs against a backdrop of longstanding issues plaguing Ligue 1, despite its status as one of Europe’s “Big Five” leagues.

As highlighted in the Deloitte report, released just before the ill-fated DAZN agreement, a decline in the value of domestic broadcast rights was anticipated, stemming from frustrations among existing broadcast partners and a lack of competitive market dynamics.

The future ramifications of this situation remain uncertain, particularly as the new broadcasting deal for Ligue 1 is still to be established, despite the incoming new cycle set to begin in August 2024.
