Invictus Australia has officially announced its intention to bid for the Invictus Games 2031, aiming to bring the prestigious international sporting event back to Australian shores for the first time since the landmark Sydney 2018 Games.
The announcement marks the start of a year-long mission to secure government, corporate, and public backing before the formal bidding process opens in early 2027.
The bid is anchored in the findings of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which highlighted sport as a vital tool for recovery, purpose, and community connection.
Invictus Australia noted that sporting initiatives could meaningfully address over 30 of the Commission’s recommendations, positioning a home Games as a catalyst for saving and changing veteran lives across the nation.
“The Light Shines Brighter Than Ever”
Patron of Invictus Australia, General The Honourable, Sir Peter Cosgrove, emphasised that sport is a “shared language” in Australia that mirrors the camaraderie of military service.
“When the Games came to Sydney in 2018, I spoke about keeping the momentum alive.”
“Thanks to this bold bid, that light shines brighter than ever,” Sir Peter remarked.
Describing the 2031 intention as a “call to action” for the Australian public, CEO, Michael Hartung OAM, addded: “These Games are a catalyst for strengthening recovery pathways and connecting a community of support.”
While the Invictus Games Foundation noted that competition to host the 2031 iteration is already “hotting up,” Australia’s proven track record and the deep integration of the “Defend the Island” spirit make it a formidable contender.
Strategic Alliance and Global MomentumTo develop a “world-class” proposal, Invictus Australia has renewed its partnership with Deloitte, the firm that played a key role in the success of the 2018 event. This collaboration aims to build a commercially credible and inclusive bid that reflects the resilience of the Australian veteran community.
