Football Australia Demands $343 Million Legacy Fund to Address Critical NSW Infrastructure Gap

Football Australia, in partnership with Football NSW and Northern NSW Football, has formally called upon the New South Wales Government to establish a $343 million Legacy Fund to support the surge in female participation following the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™.

The proposed initiative seeks annual grant rounds of $34 million over a decade to bridge a widening “facilities gap,” as female player numbers in the state have skyrocketed by nearly 31% between 2022 and 2025.

Commenting on the announcement, Football Australia CEO, Martin Kugeler, said: “Football Australia, alongside Football NSW and Northern NSW Football, is calling on the NSW Government to deliver a long-term grassroots football facilities fund to ensure the state can meet demand and secure a meaningful legacy for women’s football.”

Football NSW CEO, John Tsatsimas, further highlighted the physical constraints facing local clubs, noting that “fields currently lose around 34% of their capacity due to playing field conditions,” including substandard lighting and irrigation.

The investment would focus on delivering gender-inclusive changerooms and upgraded drainage across metropolitan and regional hubs to ensure year-round playability for the state’s largest participation sport.

The 2026 tournament is forecast to generate $260 million in national economic output, underscoring the commercial necessity of maintaining high-standard community infrastructure to support the sport’s long-term growth trajectory.

Northern NSW Football CEO, Peter Haynes, emphasised that the current demand has already outpaced existing government investment, describing the situation as a defining moment for the code’s regional sustainability.

The proposed fund would be administered by the NSW Office of Sport, ensuring that the momentum generated by the CommBank Matildas’ recent international success translates into a permanent structural advantage for future generations of Australian footballers.
