Commonwealth Games Australia Announces $1.5 Million Athlete Support Package for Glasgow 2026

Commonwealth Games Australia has unveiled a landmark $1.5 million direct investment program to support every Australian athlete selected for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Under the initiative, each selected representative will receive a $5,000 performance boost, providing flexible, athlete-driven funding designed to enhance the final phases of their competitive preparation.

While previous funding for the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Games was distributed via the dAIS Athlete Grant scheme, the 2026 commitment will be paid directly from Commonwealth Games Australia to the athletes.

Empowering Athlete Choice and Performance

The funding is intended to provide athletes with the financial autonomy to address highly personal performance needs. Whether utilised for specialist coaching, sports science, medical care, or reducing professional work hours to focus on training, the grant aims to provide an edge in a high-performance environment where marginal gains are critical.

Emphasising that the investment puts choice directly into the hands of the competitors, Australian Team Chef de Mission, Petria Thomas OAM OLY, said: “At this stage of preparation, it’s often the small, highly personal decisions, an extra camp, a piece of equipment, or working one less shift, that unlock the best possible performance.”

“These final months are where one small improvement can be the difference between a podium finish and just missing out,” he said.

The Green2Gold2Great Investment Strategy

The $1.5 million allocation is a key component of Commonwealth Games Australia’s broader $13 million Green2Gold2Great (G2G2G) Investment Program.

This strategy aims to ensure Australia maintains its position as the top-performing nation at the Commonwealth Games across several metrics:

  • Total gold and overall medal counts.
  • The total number of individual medallists.
  • The diversity of sports in which Australia secures medals.

Since its inception in 1996, the G2G2G initiative has seen more than $67 million committed to Australian athletes and sporting programs, with $11.6 million invested during the current quadrennium alone.
