Caitlin Clark Joins Bid to Bring NWSL Expansion Team to Cincinnati

Basketball star Caitlin Clark has joined the ownership group spearheading Cincinnati’s bid for an expansion team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The bid, led by the ownership group of Major League Soccer club FC Cincinnati, aims to establish the city as the 16th NWSL team, with play projected to begin in 2026.

The NWSL is expected to announce its decision on the expansion bids before the end of 2024, with Cincinnati competing against Cleveland and Denver for the spot. Cincinnati’s bid is seen as a strong contender due to its robust ownership backing and existing infrastructure.

Caitlin Clark, currently a rookie with the Indiana Fever in the WNBA, is a key addition to the Cincinnati bid. At 22, Clark is already regarded as one of the most accomplished collegiate basketball players of all time, with a standout career at the Iowa Hawkeyes. Her involvement is highlighted by her commitment to elevating women’s sports in the Greater Cincinnati area.

“The NWSL Cincinnati bid team is thrilled that Caitlin Clark has joined our ownership group in pursuit of bringing a women’s professional soccer team to our city,” the bid team said in a statement. “Her passion for the sport, commitment to elevating women’s sports, and influence as an athlete and role model make her a vital part of our compelling bid.”

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman confirmed on Friday that Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Denver are the three finalists in the bidding process. While Cincinnati is seen as a favourite, Cleveland’s bid also presents a compelling case, with the Cleveland Soccer Group planning a $150 million, 12,500-seat stadium on newly acquired land in downtown Cleveland.

“The process is ongoing, and we’re really enthusiastic about the final three prospects that we have,” Berman said during her address before the NWSL Championship game, where the Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit will compete.
