Andrew Parsons has been re-elected President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) for a third and final four-year term, following a decisive vote at the 2025 IPC General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea.
The Brazilian administrator, who first took on the IPC presidency in 2017, secured 109 of 177 valid votes, defeating South Korean candidate Dong Hyun Bae, who received 68.
Parsons will now lead the Paralympic Movement until 2029, closing out more than two decades of service at the international level.
Expressing his gratitude to IPC members for their continued trust, Parson, said: “I’m really happy, I think it shows the confidence and trust of the IPC membership with the direction of where we are going with the Paralympic Movement.”
“Being able to finish what I started in 2017 while opening new projects and opportunities in my final term will be incredible,” he said.
During his presidency, Parsons has guided the Paralympic Movement through some of its most transformative years. He secured a landmark partnership with the International Olympic Committee through to 2032, redefined the IPC’s long-term strategy, and oversaw delivery of four Paralympic Games – including Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, the latter hailed as the most spectacular in history with record participation.
Alongside Parsons’ re-election, two new vice-presidents were chosen.
Portugal’s Leila Marques Mota, a four-time Paralympian and medical doctor, was elected First Vice-President, while Denmark’s John Petersson, a five-time Paralympic medalist and former European Paralympic Committee President, became Second Vice-President. Both succeed Duane Kale of New Zealand, who had reached his maximum term.
Marques Mota, who served as Portugal’s Chef de Mission at Tokyo 2020, pledged to serve with “integrity, transparency, and close connection to members.” Petersson described his election as “fantastic” after more than a decade of IPC governance experience.
The elections for Members-at-Large to the IPC Governing Board were postponed due to time constraints, with an Extraordinary General Assembly to be convened remotely to finalise the appointments.
