One of Australia’s most iconic netballers, Sharelle McMahon, is stepping back into the sport where she built her legacy. McMahon has been appointed as the General Manager, High Performance and Pathways at Netball Victoria, a role designed to strengthen the connection between grassroots programs and elite pathways while driving high-performance standards.
McMahon, who will begin her role in February 2025, brings extensive experience from her tenure as head of female cricket at Cricket Victoria.
This appointment sees McMahon taking on a strategic leadership role, collaborating closely with Melbourne Vixens Head Coach Simone McKinnis OAM to enhance the elite pathways for players, coaches, umpires, and officials across Victoria. The goal is to strengthen the Melbourne Vixens’ competitiveness in the Suncorp Super Netball competition while ensuring robust grassroots and pathway development.
McMahon’s credentials as a netball icon are well established. With 118 caps for the Australian Diamonds, she is the second most capped player in team history and a two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Her illustrious career also includes six national league titles with Melbourne Phoenix and Vixens, earning her a bronze statue outside Melbourne’s John Cain Arena—an honour reflecting her contribution to the sport’s popularity and professionalism.
Commenting on her return, McMahon highlighted her passion for netball and her gratitude for her time at Cricket Victoria. “Netball has always held a special place in my heart. I am delighted to contribute to growing the game I first fell in love with as a child,” she said.
Netball Victoria CEO Andrea Pearman emphasised McMahon’s suitability for the role, citing her leadership on and off the court and her cross-sport experience. “Sharelle’s appointment is the perfect culmination of a record-breaking year for Victorian netball, with grassroots participation and Vixens’ crowd attendance reaching new heights. We’re excited for what 2025 will bring,” Pearman said.
McMahon replaces Megan Simpson, who transitioned to Netball Australia in September. As Netball Victoria aims to build on its recent successes, McMahon’s leadership is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of netball in the state.
