Federation Square To Become Olympic and Paralympic Live Site

The Victorian Government has announced that Melbourne’s Federation Square will transform into the city’s official Live Site during the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.

Hoping to replicate the electric atmosphere seen during the 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup, harnessing fan engagement and excitement to bring significant economic benefits to the city .

The Victorian Government’s Minister for Creative Industries, Colin Brooks hopes that the live site will provide a place for fans of all ages to gather and celebrate together. “Fed Square is Melbourne’s cultural heart and it’s one of the best places in the world for people of all ages and from all backgrounds to gather and share in our historic sporting moments,” said Mr. Brooks.

The influx of fans is expected to boost local businesses, from food vendors to retail outlets, significantly increasing their revenue during the Games.

To manage the large crowds, entry for Matilda’s matches will be ticketed, with temporary fencing and bag checks also in place to ensure a safe environment.

For those looking to attend the Matilda’s matches, you can register your interest below, with tickets awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

In partnership with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), Paralympics Australia (PA), and Channel Nine, the live site will also feature daily screenings from 12 pm to 4 pm with highlights and replays, followed by live broadcasts from 4 pm to 10 pm. Katrina Sedgwick, Director & CEO of Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation, said, “For the first time, Fed Square is an official live site for the Olympic and Paralympic Games – and the biggest in Victoria. Fed Square is the place to be home for crowds wanting to celebrate epic sporting moments together.”

The atmosphere at Fed Square is expected to boost the morale of Australian athletes competing in Paris. Cameron Murray, Acting CEO of Paralympics Australia, said, “The atmosphere created at Olympics and Paralympics live events will help fuel the passion and determination of our athletes as they compete against the world’s best and will hopefully inspire them to make our nation proud.” This shared experience encourages further spending on associated events and activities, amplifying economic benefits.

Matt Carroll, CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee, added, “The AOC is thrilled to have Fed Square as an official Olympics and Paralympics live site. A site that promises to unite thousands of people all sharing witness in this important cultural moment – the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.” Carroll highlighted how these fan activations not only build community spirit but also translate into increased economic activity as fans spend more time and money engaging with the event.
